During the typography workshop at Gobelins school, we had to create a typography inspired by a monument and animate it according to its architectural characteristics. I chose to work with Howl's Moving Castle from Hayao Miyazaki's movie. It is a monument inspired by the steampunk aesthetic, using several industrial elements worn by time. These elements are arranged in an strong but disorderly way, given a feeling of strength and chaos.

I designed a Roman typeface with a strong and imposing body supported by a small serif reminding the fragile legs of the castle. The oblique axis unbalance the letters, the lobes come through the baseline to recall the wobbly aspect of the castle. The letters are composed with industrial elements and animated as pulleys, springs and pumps. The whole thing gives a disordered feeling, amplified by a disordant sound design.
